Facebook Shops A Deeper Look

Facebook Shops A Deeper Look

CLICK TO SEE WHAT MATTERS TO YOU :

Facebook launched a promising NEW product called SHOPS, we dive into what that means for the platform, retailers, customers and the internet as a whole.

Its time to take a deeper look and look at what really is on offer and what it means for everyone.

Introducing Facebook Shops

‘Facebook Shops make it easy for businesses to set up a single online store for customers to access on both Facebook and Instagram. Creating a Facebook Shop is free and simple. Businesses can choose the products they want to feature from their catalog and then customize the look and feel of their shop with a cover image and accent colors that showcase their brand. This means any seller, no matter their size or budget, can bring their business online and connect with customers wherever and whenever it’s convenient for them. ‘

Packaged up as a way to help small businesses through these tough times and with Mark Zuckerberg sharing on his Facebook Live that there would be ‘No Direct Costs‘ to use Facebook Shops, but with a clear stated objective on encouraging more small businesses and retailers to use the platform.

For anyone with a Business Page you will be used to seeing the pushed to;

BOOST POST ‘  OR  ‘ CREATE AN AD

As a form of ‘encouragement’ from the platform whilst using it for your businesses, to support their business too.

Mark shared that the platform makes it’s money from advertising and eluded to the fact that more business users would mean more revenue for Facebook through their existing advertising platform.

In an interesting intro to Mark‘s Facebook Live, I wonder how man people noticed the subtle nod to all platforms owned by Facebook…

LOOK CLOSELY…

Are Facebook Shops A Digtial Currency Or Ecommerce Play?

You have to admit that it makes sense that the social platform with the highest number of monthly active users, and most data on those users (and those using their wide range of integrations) would dive into the Ecommerce world feet first!

I am just surprised it has taken this long…

Despite trying to launch their own digital currency, and being met with a whole world of resistance, Facebook always has many cards in play at any given time.

This move is a very clever way to allow them collect even more data on the spending habits and behaviours of it’s users. And to attract even more.
Tristan Griffiths #ImTristanG

There is also nothing to say this might not be a way to get users so used to using the platform for quick and easy purchasing – (much like Amazon) with their speedy checkouts and native design, that they could then introduce the Digital Currency internally, maybe even incentivised over other payment methods for quicker adoption by users of the platform, because everyone will be so used to using it.

Only time will tell on this…

What do you think?

Facebook Shops For Businesses & Retailers

What this could mean for those businesses prepared to get involved with Facebook Shops and explore this new opportunity, is that they will be able to access literally millions of customers, as well as offering an unrivalled way to reach them quicker and easier than ever before, (thanks to it’s somewhat questionable user data archive

With the announcement of ‘easy to import and setup‘ from numerous other platforms (including Shopify) – the team have looked at ways to make the transition as smooth as possible in starting to bring your shop fully to Facebook.

Mark even had Tobias “Tobi” Lütke, the CEO of Shopify join him on the Facebook Live to discuss how easy it would be to set up a shop with Facebook & Shopify and how important brand stories are in the customer experience and journey to purchasing products in these current times.

Small business owners are busy enough, inviting them to setup a new digital presence for their shop could otherwise be very overwhelming.

This easy integration is a smart move by Facebook, but also one that maybe other e-commerce platforms should be worried about.

Making this transition easy, will win lots of sellers over to the platform, as long as they are not still wary of the Cambridge Analytica scandal around user data.

Would YOU trust Facebook with your customer’s data too?
Tristan Griffiths ImTristanG

Ultimately this new Facebook Shops feature is a new way for people to sell on Facebook, and if we are honest people have been selling there in other ways for a long time.

It’s now more about being able to add products & services to actually carry out the purchase transaction natively on Facebook
Tristan Griffiths ImTristanG

Overall the offering is good for you if you currently have NO SHOP and want to avoid any additional costs at this point, but you do need to be aware you are then at the complete mercy of the Facebook Gods and when they change things you will have no say in how that affects your customer positively or negatively.

This is also good as an additional place to attract customers, and will be great if you are looking to increase your reach, but I would advise against it becoming you ONLY or main shop, as you can’t fully control the customer journey and experience as much here as on your own owned property (your website)

Setting up once allows you to roll the shop across Facebook & Instagram NOW, and the Facebook team are working on shopping experiences for Whatsapp and Messenger.

Below is an overview o what Mark talked about and what is coming from Facebook Shops if you want to see the overview in text click here.

We have sen it before and I am sure we will see it again, Facebook likes to ‘partner‘ with companies, and then either buy them out, or learn from their IP and then build their own versions, leaving the others redundant.

Remember when Snapchat took the vertical stories market by storm? It wasn’t long until Facebook integrate Stories

[ Although a far less polished product

Do you remember when SKYPE used to be responsible for the calling technology in the early video call part of Messenger

Where is that today?

With API integration and what looks like a marketplace for partners, this could be different, but time will tell on that front.

Other considerations for partners and these other companies and software solutions is that Facebook is basically coming in and undercutting them.

With NO FEES to setup or use Facebook Shops use, could this see an end for plugins by WooCommerce, or Shopify as a platform all together, because Facebook Shops is a FREE solution targeting the same market?

The real cost of this FREE solution from Facebook could be the loss of options, as other companies may struggle to make their money and stay afloat.

Another possible Monopoly situation?
